Odense is Denmark’s third largest city with a population of around 200,000. It is named after the Nordic god Odin and there has been human settlement in the Odense area for over 4,000 years, although the city’s name was not mentioned in writing until 988. Canute IV, generally considered to be the last Viking king, was murdered in Odense on 10 July 1086. His bones can even be seen in the cathedral crypt.
